STA2.19: Do you think we are going to benefit from regional economic integration?
Background
The East African Community (EAC) is an intergovernmental organization composed of six countries in eastern Africa: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Uganda. Having collapsed in 1977, it was revived on 7 July 2000. In 2010 EAC launched its own common market for goods, labor, and capital within the region, with the goal of creating a common currency and eventually a full political federation.
EAC has a market size of 146 million people, the integration intends to increase the per capita income from USD 1000 to USD 10,000 in the near future and create 2.3 million jobs by 2032 in the industrial and manufacturing sectors. However, the integration is taking long to achieve the major objectives it set out back in 2010, facing issues of peace and security, political instability (eg; Burundi & Sudan), corruption and also facing the challenge of maintaining good governance and promoting multiparty democracy among others.
