Campaign Background

Ugandan mango farmers have struggled with the mango mealybug, a pest that damages fruit trees, reduces yields, and impacts livelihoods. TRAC FM and CABI launched this campaign to raise awareness and equip farmers with practical solutions through interactive radio programs and SMS engagement. Running from December 11, 2024, to January 31, 2025, the campaign ensured farmers received expert guidance in their local languages and could share their experiences to improve pest management strategies.

Partners and Scope

This campaign was a collaboration between TRAC FM and CABI, combining CABI’s agricultural expertise with TRAC FM’s community-driven radio model. It was broadcast on Radio Simba, Radio West, and Delta FM, covering Central, Western, and Eastern Uganda. Thousands of farmers tuned in, participated in SMS polls, and contributed valuable insights, helping shape future agricultural interventions.

Objective and Impact

The campaign educated farmers on mango mealybug identification and control, promoted early detection, and connected communities with experts through interactive discussions. SMS polls gathered real-time data, helping refine pest management strategies. By providing timely, accessible, and actionable advice, the initiative helped reduce crop losses, strengthen food security, and support sustainable farming practices across Uganda.
