BACKGROUND

The district local council of Soroti district has passed a law stopping the teaching of Ateso language in schools.

This means that schools in Soroti district have abolished the teaching of Ateso as well as teaching in the language of Ateso. This comes at a time when the Iteso cultural Union is calling for the promotion of the Ateso language.

The reason advanced for this move is that poor performance in the district and Teso sub region as a whole is because children cannot speak and read in English.
