In your opinion, does Uganda have the medical infrastracture, staff and drug stock to handle epidemics like ebola and cholera?
Background
On 31st July, 2014, the Minister of health issued a press statement warning the
people of Uganda to take precautionary measures to avoid being infected with
the deadly Ebola virus that has infected more than one thousand people in West
Africa, and killed over 700.
In Uganda, there are only 3 national referral hospitals: Mulago hospital,
Mbarara hospital and Butabika hospital. There are also 12 regional hospitals,
and 39 district hospitals. But Mulago hospital, for example, deteriorates every
year, with few workers to handle many patients, no medicine for patients and
only recently, no money to pay the hospital’s water bill.
Uganda has seen several major Ebola outbreaks, with over 200 people dying in the year 2000, but only 17 deaths in 2012. Cholera is another dangerous epidemic, and it has been occuring annually in Arua since 1998.
