Has anyone you know suffered from trauma as a result of the 20 year LRA war?
BACKGROUND
According to an article published in the Daily Monitor on November 3rd 2014, a 58 year old man, William Obina, committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in Nwoya District. He left a
letter explaining that domestic misunderstandings with his wife had left him
unhappy. He is the second person in the sub-county to commit suicide over a
domestic dispute.
Mzee Celestino Acellam, an elder, said the high cases of
suicide in Acholi sub-region are due to the exposure of mass killings that
residents were exposed to during the LRA war. His theory was confirmed by
Proffessor Emilio Ovuga, a psychiatrist at Gulu University Faculty of Medicine,
who says that locals are still suffering from the trauma of the war.
In the year 2014, 260 peoiple have committed suicide in the
Acholi sub-region. 30 of these cases occurred in Gulu district.
There are many signs of trauma, such as mood swings of sadness, depression or anger. Some people abuse alcohol, others have trouble sleeping and some people suffer from nightmares. Other people are unable to have normal relationships with people in their society.
