What do you think is the best weapon to fight HIV/AIDS?
BACKGROUND
1st December is World Aids Day. As Uganda commemorates it, an estimated 60% of
youth still lack knowledge on HIV prevention, according to findings by Reach A Hand
Uganda. This youth led organization addresses issues that leave Ugandan youth
vulnerable, such as HIV, Sexually Transmitted infections and unintended
pregnancy.
Humphrey Nabimanya, a team leader with Reach A Hand Uganda, says that one of
the big problems is that condoms are used inconsistently. In long term
relationships, young people begin to trust each other and start having
unprotected sex without using a condom.
While Reach A Hand is promoting the use of condoms, on Uganda’s national agenda
to fight HIV, they are the last option. The first is Abstinence where one does
not have sex until marriage, and the second is Being faithful, where one does
not cheat on their partner.
