Do you understand how the new pre-paid billing system ‘Yaka’ operates?
BACKGROUND
According
to the New Vision of Friday, November 28, 2014, there is a need for UMEME to
sensitize Ugandans about the newly introduced prepaid billing system known as ‘Yaka’.
There have been media reports of how a cross-section of people
using prepaid meters are unhappy with the UMEME billing system, arguing that
they pay more money and get less electricity units than they have actually paid
for and these units run out
fast.
Many Ugandans have been connected to Yaka without
enough sensitization. Some people even think it is compulsory yet it is
optional to convert from post paid to pre-paid. So the issue might not lie with
‘Yaka’ but with UMEME for not educating Ugandans about the new system. This has
led to Ugandans accusing UMEME of lacking the commitment to deliver quality
services to Ugandans, and removing any doubt as to the ‘fairness’ of this new
billing system.
