How do you access electricity in your district?
BACKGROUND
Only 5%
of the rural population in Uganda has access to electricity.
According to the Uganda Rural Electrification Strategic Plan
(2013-2022), the government aims to increase this to 22%. This
limited access to electricity especially in the rural areas hinders
the national ambitions to transform Uganda from a low income country
to a middle income one by 2040 because it reduces the growth of
industries which provides employment and increases the country’s
revenue base.
Uganda
designed the Rural Electrification Strategic Plan to achieve
universal electrification by the year 2040. It is also desired that
by 2030, all rural Ugandan homes will have replaced kerosene lighting
with electricity. This is in line with the United Nation's initiative
on modern energy access for all which obligates all governments to
ensure the availability of clean and affordable modern energy in all
homes by 2030. This includes using cleaner, more efficient
technologies for cooking and lighting in households. For this,
electricity must be accessible to all.
