BACKGROUND

On 10th December 2014, 16 days of activism to end violence against women and girls ended. This year, the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social development decided to hold the national launch of the 16 days of activism in Gulu. The national theme for Uganda was “Act Now: Stop Teenage Pregnancy, Forced and Child Marriage.” At the Gulu launch, speakers discussed how early marriage impedes progress of girls in various spheres of life.

The end of the 16 days of activism climaxed with International Human Rights Day on 10th December. In an article published in the New Vision on that day, columnist Isabella Bwiire said that the rights of children have been overlooked in Uganda and need to take center stage.
