Where do you think the captured LRA commander Dominic Ongwen should be tried for his crimes against humanity?
BACKGROUND
Dominic Ongwen is considered by some to
be a deputy commander to the chief of the rebel group Lord's
Resistance Army, Joseph Kony. He was captured earlier this month in
the Central African Republic by the Seleka rebel group based there.
In a war that lasted 20 years in Northern Uganda and
neighboring countries, the LRA abducted thousands of children,
forcing the boys to become fighters and the girls to become sex
slaves.
Ongwen has been taken into custody by forces from the
United States of America, and the International Criminal Court (ICC)
wants to put him on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The ICC is located in the Netherlands, and is responsible for trying
criminals for crimes like genocide, war crimes and other crimes
against humanity.
But Ugandan officials do not want Ongwen to
be tried in an international court. They want him to answer for his
crimes in a Ugandan court.
