According to an article published in the daily monitor on February 13th 2015, leaders in Gulu district have asked government to embark on a general immunization exercise against Hepatitis B that is fast spreading in the district. Speaking to Daily Monitor on Wednesday, the district speaker, Mr Peter Okello Okao, said the government should avail free vaccines in all government health centers.

He asked that the government does not wait for the outbreak to become serious before acting. Hepatitis B is transmitted through exposure to infected blood or body fluids, and affects the liver. Symptoms include vomiting, yellow skin, tiredness, dark urine and abdominal pain. 15-25% of patients with chronic Hepatitis B die. At the moment the vaccines are only accessible in private hospitals.
