How have your cultural leaders promoted improved service delivery and development in the Rwenzori region & Western Uganda?
BACKGROUND
The 1995 Uganda constitution guaranteed the restoration of cultural institutions in Uganda. One of the main expectations from these institutions is to promote service delivery and preservation of acceptable socio-cultural norms that promote development.
For example, in the year 2000 Queen Sylvia Naginda Luswata of Buganda Kingdom founded the Nnabagereka Development Trust in 2000 to promote the health, education and well-being of women and children in Uganda. The Trust focuses on HIV/AIDS education, educating girls, prevention of childhood diseases and vocational training.
She noted that the first girls’ school in Uganda was built by Buganda chiefs in 1905, who felt their daughters should be educated. Other girls’ schools followed. She is also a goodwill ambassador for UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund. The Queen believes that cultural leaders play an important role in the development of nations like Uganda.
