Have women's rights improved under the NRM regime?
BACKGROUND
Since coming into
power, the NRM government has tried to improve the lives of women.
More girls go to school than before, and are educated, and there are
more women in business, politics and public office.
Under the NRM
government, there has also been a concerted effort to also fight
female circumcision and early marriages.
At the same time,
there has been critique when it comes to government legislations
regarding women's rights. For example, before the Anti-Pornography
Act, women's clothing was not an issue that would get them stripped
naked.
Another issue is the
Marriage and Divorce Act, which parliamentarians have put on the
shelf. This would equalize the rights of men and women in marriage
and divorce, giving women rights to property and child custody
following divorce and grant legal recognition to cohabiting
couples.
A growing problem in
Uganda today is also the issue of single mother households-socially, it is becoming common for men to refuse to take responsibility for their
children, leaving the mother to shoulder the burden. It is not clear if there is there
legislation to protect these women.
