BACKGROUND
On March 21st 2015, the New Vision reported that the
Uganda Tourism Board has partnered with
the East Africa Sports Tourism Initiative (EASTI) to create sports
skills in the country. The first Sports
Tourism Festival was held in Kabale during the Easter
weekend.
Aggrey Mwesigwa, the team leader of the festival,
told journalists that this is one of the key domestic tourism
campaigns across the country aimed towards driving local tourism
traffic to Uganda’s diverse tourism attractions.
The Kabale Sports Tourism Festival will be an annual event and is
part of a calendar of activities to be hosted around key tourism
destinations in Uganda and position Uganda as a preferred sports
tourism destination.
The first tourism event included
football and netball matches, wrestling, tug-of-war, an endurance
run, birding race and mountain bicycle race and a mini marathon.
