What can be done to improve Uganda’s low latrine coverage?
BACKGROUND
On
Wednesday April 8th 2015, the Daily Monitor newspaper reported that
authorities in Kalungu district had vowed to hunt down residents without
toilets, something that the New Vision of Wednesday April 1 2015 had also
carried earlier.
Sanitation remains one of
the key health issues in Uganda. Many people lack access to adequate sanitation
facilities. Reports indicate that the national average toilet coverage still at only 68 per cent.
This means that almost
7 homes out of every 10 lack toilet.
In
1964, Government came up with the Public Health Act (revised in 2000), which
requires every homestead to have a pit latrine, and failure to comply is an
offence.
