With the current upsurge in the malaria cases in Northern Uganda, would you want the IRS program to be started up again?
Background
Health workers in Northern Uganda are battling an upsurge of
Malaria cases that has seen a rise in admissions in health facilities across
the region. The
most affected districts are Lamwo, Kitgum, Pader and Gulu. Dr Nathan Onyachi,
the director Gulu Regional hospital says he suspects the upsurge could be a
result of the suspension of the indoor residual spray(IRS) exercise. On the
other hand, John Bosco Komakech, the Kitgum district vector control officer
says the current heavy rains being experienced in the region have provided conducive
atmosphere for the increase in population of mosquitoes.
The hospital recorded 150 cases in January, 132 in February,
63 in March, 148 in April and 316 cases in May with 8 death recorded. The ministry of health has
called for calm as the surveillance division heightens investigations into the
current upsurge and that it’s sending support to the districts in the form of
second line treatment for severe cases of the disease as well as supplies.
