What is at the heart of the problem on the Uganda-DRC border?
Background
Business has been halted at Vurra Customs in Arua after a group of Congolese stormed the border point wanting to take over by force the “No Man’s Land” at the border point.
President Museveni & President Joseph Kabila signed the Ngurdoto agreement which stipulates that as the border demarcation has yet to be done, both parties should halt any further construction in the disputed area until a joint technical verification is undertaken. Security operatives responded promptly, and are seen keeping guard to prevent the Congolese from extending the border point inside Ugandan territory.
The situation at this border has been tense with security operatives of both countries deployed at the border point. These are people that have worked together, with many sharing relations and are in many ways, one. Mistrust of leaders and people on either side isn’t helping the situation. In the mean time both countries continue to lose as trade continues to be stalled.
