Background

A new academic year has started for University students. This means that many parents and students are looking for or getting ready to pay tuition fees. In 2014, the government of Uganda unveiled the student loan scheme to assist students from poor backgrounds complete their education. The beneficiaries are supposed to refund the money after getting jobs. 

According to a 2015 Daily Monitor article, the then Minister of Education, Hon. Jessica Alupo reported, “out of the 1,683 applicants for the loans, 1,325 (78.7%) were approved, of which 298 (22.5%) were female.” The Observer reported that loans were extended through 12 universities (five public and seven private universities) in 2014.
