STA2.27: What would be the best incentive for subsistence farmers to go into commercial farming?
Background
In Uganda, agriculture employs more than 75% of the labor force. However, majority of the farmers in Uganda practice subsistence farming. Subsistence farming means that a farmer produces just enough to cater for their families and sometimes their produce is not enough for the family. About 1 out of every 10 farmers in Uganda practice small-scale enterprise farming - on average utilize 2 to 200 acres of land.
As a mostly agricultural country, Uganda’s economy would greatly benefit if more farmers could venture into commercial farming. In the same way, the livelihoods of farmers would improve significantly because they will be able to earn an income from their labor.
Question
a) Guaranteed market for produce
b) Organizing cooperatives
c) Lowering taxes on agricultural inputs
d) Security of land ownership
e) Mobilize farmers through projects like NAADs
