Background
Medicines are very useful in diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases if prescribed and used appropriately. However, they also have potential to cause harm.

An adverse drug reaction is an injury or side effect caused by taking medication. This injury or reaction may occur following a single dose or prolonged administration of a drug or result from the combination of two or more drugs.

This means that medicine consumers or users have to use medicine responsibly. Also, health workers have to ensure that the medicine they prescribe for patients is safe and that patients are informed of any known side effects.
