Is this the right time to prioritise discussions on the restoration of the term limits?
BACKGROUND:
According
to Daily Monitor: Buyaga West representative Barnabas Tinkasiimire,
told the President to his face that he should restore term limits and
retire.
Uganda’s
Constitution, which was put into effect in 1995, under Article (105)
clause 2 had provided for two five-year terms for a president. But in
2005, Parliament changed the Constitution by scraping term limits giving
the president an unlimited time-frame to remain a contestant in any
elections.
Today we are seeing many other key topical issues coming up such as:
1. Increased corruption and embezzlement of public funds among government officials
2. Recalling the parliament from Recess
3. Depreciation in value of the shilling
4. Poor state of roads and health care in Uganda
5. Oil in Uganda including recently discovered oil in northern Uganda
