Do you think that the Kampala City Traders are right to keep shops close in protest?

BACKGROUND:

Kampala City Traders have not opened their shops in the past 3 days.
“We cannot allow government to impose a lot of taxes on traders. We shall not open our shops until reverse its decision” Mr Kayondo the Chairperson of Kampala City Traders Association noted.

The traders are demanding the Government and Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) to remove the Pre- export Verification Conformity (PVoC) programme which is meant to weed out counterfeit goods.

The scheme is meant to fight the entry of counterfeit, fake and substandard products into the country. Under the scheme, traders are supposed to import merchandise from an approved list of manufacturers, however the traders opposed to the fees involved in the exercise which they say is very costly. Almost all shops in down town Kampala remained closed amidst heavy police deployment as traders demonstrate over the past few days.
