Background:

Over 90% of Uganda’s population relies on solid biomass fuels for cooking – primarily wood and charcoal – causing severe deforestation. Furthermore, Northern Ugandans, who rely heavily on subsistence farming for survival, sell firewood and charcoal as additional income, exasperating the already dire environmental situation. The daily household demands such as cooking food on an open fire causes the average Ugandan to fall into a routine that is both detrimental to the environment and quality of life. As such, the lack of access to information on reforestation, efficient fuel sources, efficient cooking methods and negative environmental habits has resulted in a serious environmental concern affecting the entire region. Forests have disappeared due to massive cutting of trees and they give way to fields with no or very few trees, degrading the environment and affecting the natural balance necessary for natural sustainability.
