Considering high unemployment rates especially among university graduates, what would you advise your child to go for?
BACKGROUND:
Recently in his Independence Day
speech President Museveni said part of the unemployment problem in the country
is as a result of youths enrolling for unmarketable University courses
such as degree in conflict resolution, development studies and the like.
The
President advised parents and teachers to guide children into doing
relevant courses.
University studies are prestigious but do not seem to match
the demand on the labor market and the needs of the Ugandan economy.
While young people are a critical resource for Uganda’s
future, few opportunities await them when they graduate.
Numerous stakeholders consider vocational training to
be a key missing link in the economy.
As one member of civil society
explained, “The problem is less about education itself than about the type
of education. Academic excellence is preferred over vocational skills. The
degree fails to translate into practical skills. There is a mismatch.”
