Should President Museveni remain the Chairman of the NRM Party?
BACKGROUND:
The NRM parliamentary caucus endorsed President Museveni to
stand unopposed for the party presidency in 2016. According to the NRM
Constitution, the party President becomes the flag-bearer in the
presidential elections.
The proposal was made by Northern Youth MP Evelyn Anite and it
was seconded by MPs John Simbwa (Makindye East), Hatwib Katooto
(Katerera) and the deputy Minister for Karamoja, Ms Barbara Oundo
Nekesa, according to statement issued by State House last night.
Mr
Museveni has been president since 1986—and he will mark 30 years in
power when his current term ends in 2016. Parliament in 2005 amended the
Constitution to allow Mr Museveni run again after he was left with one
year of what was then the last of his mandatory two terms.
