Why is the school dropout rate high among girls in the Teso sub-region?
BACKGROUND
According to the Teso
Education Support Project, early marriages have made girls drop out of schools
due to the strong tradition that uneducated women fetch higher bride prices and
are the source of bride wealth.
While the Teso sub
region has one of Uganda’s highest illiteracy rates, standing at 88%, a recent
Action Aid report indicates that the national primary school drop-out rates for
girls is at 80% each year in the Northern and Eastern regions, and early
marriages and teenage pregnancies are above 50%.
According to a UNESCO report, Uganda also has the
highest drop-out rates in East Africa.
