Do you think the salary increment for teachers in the 2014/15 budget will improve teachers’ performance?

Background

Uganda Government has in the 2014/2015 Financial Year Budget allocated 450 billion shillings towards enhancement of public servants salaries including salary increments for teachers. Finance minister Maria Kiwanuka noted that this was in line with government’s agreement in 2013 with the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) following a teachers strike for a 20 percent pay rise.

Kiwanuka said that with the budget allocation, the salary of the lowest paid teacher will now increase by between 15 to 25%. Following increased reports of teacher absenteeism, and poor teaching methods, it is believed that this increment will motivate teachers’ performance, and improve the quality of education for their students.
