BACKGROUND
At
19.5 liters, Uganda’s per capita alcohol consumption is one of the highest in
the world.
On
20th March 2014, the Straight Talk Foundation launched the Underage Drinking
Campaign in Gulu District, which has the highest number of underage drinkers in
Northern Uganda. The Gulu District Education Officer, Vincent Oceng claims that
this is due to two factors:
One is
the presence of video halls and bars that are set up near schools where
students take local brew in sachets. And the second is because teachers also
drink a lot, and go to class drunk, showing a bad example to students.
