Will the government investing in fish farming attract farmers to seek employment in that industry?
BACKGROUND
According
to an article published in the New Vision on 25th July 2014, at least 56 fish ponds in Adjumani
district have been abandoned by the farmers due to hardship in acquiring
fingerlings and fish feeds.
The
government in partnership with Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has
launched a project to promote fish farming in West Nile and northern regions.
The targeted districts are Adjumani, Arua, Gulu, Lira and Soroti, and the
project will cost 1.05 billion shillings. Mr Abdul Aziz, an aquaculture specialist, said
that the hatcheries would have the capacity to produce two million fingerlings
(young fish) of tilapia and cat fish and each young fish would be sold at Shs
3,000 to farmers.
The
plan is for the project to allow fish farmers to rehabilitate and stock their
fish ponds because fingerlings will be sold at affordable prices to the farmers.
