TRAC FM partnered with the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries to raise awareness of and sensitize farmers on how to detect and control the Fall armyworm (FAW) among farmers in Central Uganda – with a specific focus on Mubende, Mityana and Kiboga districts.

The Fall armyworm larvae is a pest that feeds on over 80 different crop species including maize. lt causes damage by feeding on both the vegetative and reproductive structures. This pest has been spreading in a number of African countries and so far it has been confirmed in 11 countries including Uganda and suspected to be present in 14 other countries.

TRAC FM planned and coordinated 8 radio talk shows on the FAW on Radio Simba. The 1hour talk shows were conducted in Luganda and they were aired on a weekly basis with a replay of the recorded show.
The results from the poll questions were also widely used during the talk shows as a way of providing more evidence and the integrating the opinions of the listeners in the live talk shows. In addition to that, 8-10 minutes of each show was exclusively allocated to listeners interaction - such that they can call in and ask questions or share their experiences on the FAW.

TRAC FM planned and coordinated 8 radio talk shows on the FAW on Radio Simba. The 1hour talk shows were conducted in Luganda and they were aired on a weekly basis with a replay of the recorded show. Each week, TRAC FM developed a talk show script and shared it with the radio presenter and the guests. The purpose of the script was to structure the talk show - to ensure that it remains focused on one issue and to provide some key talking points to guide the experts.

The talk show guests/ experts included officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, extension workers, farmers and one agro-dealer. 10 guests were selected to participate in the 8 talk shows and they included 4 women and 6 men. In total, these guests made 18 appearances.

TRAC FM listened to all the live talk shows and gave feedback and remarks to the presenter and the guests pointing out what was done well and where to improve where necessary.
